Building Vecentra, and where the work actually goes

There is a particular genre of startup post that announces a round, thanks a row of logos, and promises to "accelerate." This is not that post. The interesting part of Vecentra is not the cap table. It is the awkward shape of the problem we are trying to be a company around.

Vecentra is an Australian biotech, incorporated in 2026, building Gnosis: an integrated AI system for small-molecule design. The company is early on purpose. The platform exists. The scientific question is whether integrated prediction can change which molecules a lab actually makes. Everything else is downstream of that.

Who is in the room

Dr. Mahan Azad, cofounder and Chief Innovation Officer, leads Gnosis architecture, the models, and the cancer, neurodegenerative, and ALS programs. He is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience, with earlier discovery work at Griffith, the University of Sydney, and UNSW. David McDermott, cofounder and Chief Executive Officer, runs commercial strategy and partnerships. He has spent two decades in leadership and strategy, and he chairs Parkinson's Queensland, which is a useful corrective when a computational company starts talking about neurodegeneration as if it were a market slide.

What the resources are actually for

• A machine learning and computational chemistry bench, because the models do not maintain themselves
• Compute for repeated design cycles, the unglamorous kind that happens before anyone synthesises anything
• Collaborations with experimental groups who can tell us when we are wrong

The commercial shape is correspondingly unromantic. Near term, the people we work with are small and mid-sized biotechs and translational teams who already have a funded program and a decision due: which analogues to make, which liabilities to chase, which series to stop. They do not need another dashboard. They need a short list, a reason, and an experiment. That is what a Candidate Intelligence Codex is for.

A small note on honesty

We will write a proper funding post when there is a proper funding story, with names and numbers we are willing to stand behind. Until then the work is the platform, the collaborations, and the candidates. Those are less photogenic than a round announcement, and much harder to fake.
